In Sierra de Guara, Aragón, there are exciting water sports and aquatic activities, including rafting, sailing, canyoning, and kayaking, all set against a backdrop of stunning scenery.

I lacked information about this sport in the northeastern region of Spain, so I searched the internet to discover the most fascinating places in Aragón that offer aquatic adventures. After a brief search, I chose to spend my summer vacation in the Sierra de Guara area for its stunning landscapes, lush vegetation, and crystal-clear waters. However, I was not prepared for how impressed I would be by this remote area, especially when experiencing it firsthand. This was particularly true when I visited the Mascún streambed (Mascún Ravine) and participated in my first mountain water sports activity.

After driving for an hour and a half from Zaragoza, I arrived in Alquézar, the closest village to the Mascún Gorge. The adventure was pre-arranged, as many businesses in the village specialize in organizing excursions. Among the many options available, you can practice canyoning, canoeing, kayaking, or rafting. We chose ‘Alquézar Adventure,’ a company located on the road to Barbastro, just across from Camping Alquézar.

Accompanied by a group of friends and a guide (these sports always require an expert’s accompaniment), we went canyoning on the first day. I was the first to navigate the natural rockslides scattered along the channel where the stream flows.

As my body flowed with the stream’s water, my fear of this sport disappeared. It felt as if I had been practicing it all my life, and I became an instant canyoning enthusiast by the end of this adventure. The guide was adamant: ‘I forbid you to leave Aragón without trying rafting.’ He claimed it was the most enjoyable water sport activity in the region, and he was right. I hadn’t laughed so much with my friends in a long time as I did during rafting.

The perils of the rapid descent down the river channels in these five-person rafts quickly turned into pure adrenaline. The combination of the guide’s extensive experience, which made us feel at ease, and our lack of skill made the adventure highly entertaining.

After two days of intense and enjoyable activity, my body began to complain a little, but that was likely due to my lack of fitness. In the following days, we engaged in a more cultural activity, which I appreciated. What pleased me the most was savoring the rich experience of practicing water sports in Aragón, a little-known corner with stunning landscapes.
